One of the first things you should do before you take the first picture is to select the right file format. If you are using a digital SLR, you will have more choices than if you are shooting with a more basic digital camera. The use of RAW formats has become much more widely accepted, however, there are still some photographers who do not know the difference between the two formats. And then there are those who know the difference and are strongly in favor of one or the other. The goal of this post is to explain the difference between JPEG and RAW in a way that makes sense. JPEG (also known as JPG) is The Standard digital format for graphic images produced by a digital camera. The camera uses software to process a digital image in-camera and produce a usable file that can be printed or posted on the Web. The processing of the image in the camera results in a "lossy compression" that discards certain unnecessary picture information in order to produce a picture with good quality and a smaller file size. The Sennheiser G2 wireless system I use right now works great and most of the time the two sets I use are plenty, but lately I've run into situations where it would be nice to have one or 2 extra for a second camera. So I started looking around on ebay for a set of used G2 Ew100′s in a different frequency. It seems that they've become so popular that the used price is almost the same as the new price. I was about to give up and order a new set from B&H when I came across the Samson Airline Micro wireless system. I vaguely remember hearing something about them last year, but I never actually followed up to see if they'd been released. I found a refurbished set on Amazon for 5 and thought I'd give them a try. Over All at a price of 0 to 0 I think the Samson Airline Micro Is a very good value. Even though the audio wasn't as clean and clear as the Sennheiser EW100 G2 unit I normally use, I don't feel like the difference was big enough for most people to really notice. I think most will forgive the slight difference in audio quality for a 0 savings over the Sennheiser G2. Pros: The compact size, protective case, UHF band, and price. Cons: No way to change out the battery, difficult to program, and the audio is a little muddy. Conclusion: If you listen to the audio tests and can't tell the difference then the Samson Airline Micro should make you very happy ...

He loves focusing on documentary work, especially long-term black and white documentary projects, both domestically and internationally. In the field, Dan uses a very stripped down system of equipment. He often works with a single camera and a lens and occasionally mixes cameras and formats only when he teaches. Typically, he advises against mixing formats, such as color and black & white photographs. You only have a split second to catch an image when analyzing a scene, and having too complex a set-up may cause you to miss the moment. Developing the idea of a project's story is crucial, so he always does his research beforehand. Nowadays, it is easy to do documentary work by going out into the field and winging it, but when you have a theme in mind, it's better to perform research for a more complete picture. www.learningdslrvideo.com A while back I did a BTS video of a camera crew using the RED Epic, after that I got an email from James Drake who is co-owner of 5kInsight.com, a local RED camera rental house in Denver, asking if I would like to see one and try it out. I was like, "Sure you bet, that would be fun". So we met up at Denver's Union Station a few days ago and James gave me a tutorial on how to shoot with it which you will see here, after that I got to shoot a video interview with James using his Epic. It's an interesting interview and tutorial because James relates a lot stuff on the RED Epic to shooting with a DSLR since he owns a Canon 5D as well. I think this tutorial is worth watching or at least bookmarking because some of you in the future will need to rent one of these to intermix footage with your DSLR or do an entire shoot with it when you client has the budget for it. Right now I'm in the process of taking the Epic's footage from the interview and learning the workflow so I can publish the interview pretty soon, so keep an eye out for it. I wanted say thanks to Patrick Downey who is James assistant that was nice enough to take my Canon T2i and film this tutorial for me. If you noticed the audio change during the tutorial, this because Patrick had to change cards and the second part of the audio was not done on a Magic Lantern card so you can heard the AGC in action.

An introduction about different types of flash and how light behaves. For example what id meant by 'hard' or 'soft' light? How do you find or create hard and soft light from your flash gun? I find it helps to visualise light as water and think about what would water do when squirted from a hose. If you put a sprinkler on the end it's a bit like adding a diffuser to your flash. The light shatters and becomes softer. But I reckon the bit you'll enjoy most is bounce flash. With the help of Lorna and a hose pipe we'll show you how light behaves when you bounce it off a wall or ceiling.

www.slrlounge.com Lomo Photography or Lomography has gained quite the cult following in recent years. And it's no wonder. These little Lo-Fi cameras, such as the Lomo LC-A, produce some really cool and compelling images. Aside from the Lo-Fi look of the Lomo, the other main feature of Lomography is the cross processing of the Color Slide Film. A while back, I was trying to recreate this look on my digital photographs. However, the few tutorials I found online, while they were a start, didn't really get me to the final Lomo look that I was trying to achieve. So, I made my own process, and now I have turned it into a full in depth tutorial for all of our SLR Lounge peeps. We have broken this tutorial into two distinct parts. In Part I, we are going to take a look at Lomo Photography and dissect the images effects so that we know exactly how to reproduce them in Photoshop. In Part II, we are going to start Photoshopping our image from start to finish. So, if you want to get straight to the Photoshop part of this tutorial, skip to the second video. In Part I, we identified the steps we need to turn our digital images into great looking Lomo style images. The GoPro HD Hero (Helmet series) kit that I bought a few years ago did NOT come with a tripod mount. So, instead of shelling out another or so for GoPro's tripod mount, I made one myself using some scrap aluminum I had laying around the shop and one of the extra stick on mounts (one with a flat base) that came with the GoPro HD Hero kit. This video is just a quick video on how I made my mount. As it has turned out, the great thing about utilizing the GoPro quick release bracket as a tripod mount is that you can pull the camera off of your helmet, put it on the tripod, and then put it back on the helmet without losing your camera angle on the helmet mount. With GoPro's tripod mount you need to unscrew your GoPro from the helmet mount, and then screw it onto the tripod mount. My mount is a lot quicker to deal with and you won't lose the mounting angle on your helmet mount switching back and forth. -WheeliePete
