Well with out a doubt the canon 35mm f1.4 is probably the most used lens in my collection on a crop sensor camera. The Canon 35mm f1.4 is ruffly a 55mm on a crop sensor camera making it an ideal focal length for filming. There are a few lenses in this focal length including the Canon 28mm f1.8, the Sigma 30mm f1.4, and the sigma 28 f1.8 but none of them preform quit as well as the Canon 35mm f1.4. Is the canon 35mm f1.4 worth it? If you have the money then yes, but at a price tag of almost 00 you could buy 3 mid range primes and still have a little bit of money left over. It might be better to have 3 good prime lenses then a single great lens. The Canon 35mm does preform better then any of the other lenses in this focal range, and chances are if your considering it you've probably already made the choice. Although the audio tests don't show any real difference in audio quality, the higher price of the VideoMic pro gives you a much smaller and lighter package. The new design has better suspension system and the +20db switch gives you a much stronger audio single for cameras with poor or noise amplifiers. Pros: Smaller Size Better shock mount design +20db audio output for stronger mic signals Cons: Flimsy looking audio cable If you need a smaller on camera microphone or a stronger audio signal for your camera, it's worth the extra to for the VideoMic pro. If you don't care about the large size of the original VideoMic and don't have problems with the output volume, you'll probably be just as happy with the original Rode VideoMic. Update: Right after I posted this video I was sent a link from Rode saying the thinner cable was reinforced by some kind of material. Hopefully that is correct. If it is then the thinner cable is probably a good thing. Also there is a mistake at the 4 min mark where I accidentally refer to the original Rode VideoMic as the VideoMic Pro. www.learningdslrvideo.com I was excited when I got some boxes in the mail, the Nikon D5100 and the Canon T3i/600D. Both are very comparable entry level DSLR's. Both are about the same price. I know all I talk about on this site is Canon so I wanted to really give Nikon some air time now that is appears they are getting more serious about video on their DSLR's. I think it would be great to have a bunch of Nikon D5100 tutorials on this site. Both of the cameras are really close in cost and they both have features like 1080p video and flip out screens. The Nikon doesn't have all the frame rates that the Canon has but Nikon appears to have better low light performance. I was all set to spend a ton of time shooting with both and doing a really thorough review when I learned something shocking about the Nikon. You can't shoot video in a full manual exposure on the Nikon like you can with the Canon EOS cameras. (You sort of can watch this video) The non manual movie mode is kind of a deal breaker for me, but instead of boxing it back up and sending it back, I wanted to still run a few comparisons first. Tests: Low light Aliasing Rolling shutter Bottom line is if you are serious about getting started with an entry level DSLR for any type of video that is going to require some tweaking, get the Canon T3i over the Nikon D5100. Just a run through of the filters I own and how you can apply them to the Powershot SX40 HS. Filters are great fun and also an ideal way to protect that fragile lens from any form of damage. I bought the filter adapter through amazon but the provider is powerplanet.co.uk, if you go to their site it will divert you through to Amazon. The lens adaptor is the LA-58SX30. You can type that straight into amazon and it will show up :) Since making this video, many people have bought 67mm filters rather than the 58mm. Canon offer this as the main filter so it's an idea to go with Canons advice. I already owned many 58mm filters so it makes sense for me to get that one. Both work but you may be able to stack more filters without cropping with the 67mm.
